Hot Looks for Cooler Weather
By Katharine Swan

Experts in men’s fashion used to say that you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day.  While that rule isn’t always upheld anymore, it is still true that certain colors looks are best reserved for a specific season.  As cooler weather descends on us, be sure to dress for the occasion, from your tie all the way down to your socks and shoes.

Color Coordinating

Choosing the right colors is an important part of dressing for the season.  In fall and winter, the most stylish colors tend to be earthy or autumnal.  Think warm and dark: neutrals such as camel, grey, and brown are popular, while colors take on darker hues, such as dark reds and oranges.

However, keep in mind that some colors should be worn with caution.  For most people, shades of beige are not complimentary when worn next to the face.  Beige makes a great neutral color for slacks, but beige shirts should be avoided.  Also, shades of red and orange should never be worn next to each other; no matter how autumnal the colors are, the overall effect of mixing red and orange tends to be rather garish.

The Right Materials

Cozy and comfortable is the key to dressing for cooler weather.  Ties should be made from materials that provide for a sleek, rich appearance.  Corduroys are popular this time of year, and are more versatile than jeans: cords can easily be dressed up with a casual blazer and tie, or worn with a casual shirt or sweater for a more laid-back look.

Sweaters are also a great choice as the temperature drops.  Cashmere, although expensive, is one of the top materials for a sweater, as it is the most comfortable – and the most touchable.  Chunkier sweaters, such as cable knits, provide a stylish way to welcome the cooler weather.

Layering: Sweaters and Outerwear

Being able to create a layered look is an important skill when it comes to dressing for cooler weather.  Sweaters are one way to stay warm and look sharp at the same time.  When worn over a button-down shirt and tie, V-neck and crewneck sweaters can look just as sharp as a suit and tie.

What you wear out-of-doors matters as much as what shows when you’re inside.  Nothing spoils a look faster than slapping a puffy parka on over it.  When you need to stay warm and maintain your appearance, an overcoat or a peacoat is a much better choice.  These sleek coats will complement anything from a suit and tie, to slacks and a sweater, without leaving you out in the cold.

Putting It All Together

Creating the perfect fall or winter look requires more than simply knowing what colors to wear, or what fabrics are trendiest during the cool-weather seasons.  When your outfit is assembled, all of the pieces should work together to create the overall impression.  If your fall or winter style brings to mind cool, crisp days, lit fireplaces, and falling leaves or snowflakes, then you have mastered the art of dressing for the season.
